Biographical Description

John Lewis was born in North Carolina in January 1830. Prior to the passage of the 13th Amendment, Lewis was a free man of color who worked as a farmer in Halifax County. In the decades following the Civil War, he remained in Halifax County, raising a family and working as a painter in the printing industry. He died sometime after the 1910 census was enumerated.
