Edmond Brady (alias Berry Pitman) was born around 1858 in North Carolina. Brady worked as a laborer and resided in Robeson County, North Carolina. Brady was charged with larceny for allegedly stealing a horse on March 25, 1878, and sentenced to fifteen years in the North Carolina State Penitentiary. Brady was recorded in the North Carolina State Penitentiary's Descriptive Register for the Years 1869-1884 as prisoner number 2620. Brady's race was described as "colored." Brady was twenty years old when he was arrested. Brady was noted as possessing no formal education, meaning he could not read or write at that time. During his incarceration, Brady was leased to the Western North Carolina Railroad Company to work on railroad construction. He died in prison on September 30, 1882.
