Biographical Description

Patience, an African American woman residing in Johnston County, North Carolina, was enslaved by Benjamin Shuttleworth. In 1768 she came before the local freeholders court to testify in a trial involving three enslaved men accused of poisoning Isaac Williams. She stated that Harry and Coff had went to visit a conjurer, or local practitioner of folk medicine and magic. Further she stated that she saw Dick give out some truck, a herbal substance with supposedly magical properties, to another enslaved man. Any further information regarding this individual has not been located.
