Biographical Description

Quash, an African American man residing in Dobbs County, North Carolina, was enslaved by the Groom family. Quash's name was likely an English version of the Akan name Kwesi, which was given to boys born on Sundays. Quash's name indicates he might have been have been born in Africa, or born to African-born parents. According to other enslaved individuals, Quash was a conjurer, or a practitioner of folk medicine and rituals. In late 1767 some enslaved men from Johnston County sought out Quash and paid him for some herbal remedies which were supposed to make their enslavers treat them more nicely.
