John Lawrence was born in about 1743. A Quaker, he was one of four individuals appointed to present and defend a 1779 petition from the Perquimans County Quakers to the North Carolina General Assembly concerning the requirement for all citizens of the state to swear an oath of allegiance. He died in Northampton on October 23, 1796.
