William McGehe was born in New Kent County, Virginia in 1755. Later a resident of Pittsylvania County, Virginia, he served as a private in the local patriot militia during the American Revolution. McGehe applied for a veteran's pension in 1833, which was accepted. He died in Jackson County, Alabama on May 1, 1836.
