William States Lee was born on January 28, 1872, near Lancaster, South Carolina. A longtime Charlotte resident, Lee was the chief engineer and vice-president of the Duke Power Company. During World War I, he was appointed by Gov. Thomas W. Bickett to serve on the North Carolina Council of Defense. Lee died in Charlotte on March 24, 1934.
