James Ransom was born in Brunswick County, Virginia in about 1740. A resident of Bute County, North Carolina, he served as a local justice of the peace and became sheriff in 1771. Ransom represented Bute at the 2nd North Carolina Provincial Congress in 1775. He died in Warren County, North Carolina in about 1810.
