Biographical Description

Thomas Thomlinson (1732-1805) was a British schoolmaster who immigrated to Craven County in 1763. The following year, he began teaching classes and advocated for a proper schoolhouse. As a result of those efforts, Thomlinson became the first instructor of colonial North Carolina's newly established free school, which he managed until 1771.
