James Erastus McLean was born in North Carolina on September 26, 1874. McLean, a barber by trade, lived and worked in several cities across the South over the years. He owned City Barber Shop in Black Mountain (Buncombe County) for several years during the 1910s. By 1918 he had moved to Virginia. He died in Tennessee on February 18, 1955.
