Deward Edgar Walker was born in Black Mountain (Buncombe County) on September 19, 1883. He served in the U.S. Army during the Philippine-American War of 1899-1902. He returned to Black Mountain where he worked at a saw mill and later as an insurance and real estate agent. By 1940, he had settled in Virginia, where he died on June 8, 1969.
