John Whitaker Cotten Jr. was born in Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina in 1845, the same year as his father's death. He was the fourth child of wealthy planter John Whitaker Cotten and Laura Placidia Cotten (née Clark). He died in Tarboro, Edgecombe County, North in 1922.
