Jack was an African American man enslaved by Roger Moore at Blue Bank Plantation in Bladen County, North Carolina. In 1739 Jack had a chance meeting with John Watson, a white man who had just escaped from jail. Jack and Watson agreed to help one another travel north to Virginia, where they hoped to attain their freedom. Watson's later deposition indicates that Jack had a good knowledge of local geography and was well acquainted with several other enslaved people in the vicinity. While robbing Hugh Blaning's plantation, Watson was captured, but it appears that Jack and another enslaved man managed to escape. No further records regarding this individual, including whether he was ever captured or returned to Blue Bank Plantation, have been located.
