Biographical Description

Lucy, an African American woman residing in Johnston County, North Carolina, was enslaved by an unknown individual. In 1779 another enslaved person named Jacob testified before the local court that Lucy had consulted a local enslaved conjurer, or folk healer, named Bristoe. According to Jacob, Lucy had sought Bristoe's help in using magic to prevent her enslaver from sending her to Drowning Creek, or the modern-day Lumber River. Whether Lucy did end up going to Drowning Creek is undetermined. Any further records regarding this individual have not been located.
