Hannah, an African American woman residing in Johnston County, North Carolina, was enslaved by Elizabeth Durham. Hannah was married to Jacob, an African American man enslaved to Nicholas Farmer. Living on separate properties put certain constraints on Jacob and Hannah's relationship, and it's clear that Jacob was often concerned with how Hannah might be treated by her enslavers in Jacob's absence. In 1779 Jacob consulted a conjurer, or practitioner of folk medicine, in an attempt to influence Farmer into selling him to the Durhams so that he could be with Hannah. Jacob also gave Hannah a red power, which Hannah then put into Elizabeth Durham's food in an attempt to make her kinder to the enslaved people. The couple found themselves on trial in October 1779 for engaging in witchcraft, and Hannah was forced to testify against Jacob. The court found Hannah guilty of lying under oath and poisoning Elizabeth Durham and sentenced her to ten lashes as punishment. No further records concerning this individual have been located.
