Biographical Description

Sesor, or Caesar, an African American man residing in Chowan County, North Carolina, was born in about 1747. Sesor was enslaved by Charles Jordan and had both of his ears cropped or cut off, likely as a punishment for an unspecified crime. On March 1, 1766, Sesor ran away from the Jordan plantation, possibly with assistance. By March 11, 1766, Sesor was in Halifax County, North Carolina, where he was captured by Hugh Edwards and taken to the local jail. Sesor escaped again before being captured again, this time in Edgecombe County. There Sesor was charged with an unspecified crime and executed via hanging in Tarboro. In August 1766 Charles Jordan appealed to the North Carolina Colonial Assembly requesting compensation for the loss of Sesor's labor.
