Frank, an African American man residing in Johnston County, North Carolina, was enslaved by the mercantile firm of Mallett, Tulloch, and Estes. The nature of Frank's work for the firm is unclear, nor can it be determined whether Frank was in Johnston for the entirety of his enslavement or whether he traveled throughout the state on the firm's business. Whatever the nature of his enslavement, Frank was evidently a practitioner of of folk magic, or conjuring. When a Johnson County freeholders court found Frank guilty of conjuring in 1779, they sentenced him to five lashes as punishment. Any further details regarding this individual have not been located.
