Biographical Description

Jenney, an African American woman residing in Johnston County, North Carolina, was enslaved by Lewis Bryan. In 1780 Jenney stood trial before the local freeholders court. She was charged with using poison to kill Lewis Bryan's father Needham Sr. and several other members of her enslavers' family. The court found her guilty, but the exact means of poisoning and motive for such an act was not recorded. As punishment, the court ordered that she be burnt at the stake on November 18, 1780. The sheriff who oversaw her execution was Needham Bryan Jr., Jenney's alleged victim's son. Any further information regarding this individual has not been located.
