Biographical Description

Homer was an African American man residing in Chowan County, North Carolina who, in 1772, was enslaved by Samuel Johnston. Homer was likely a resident of Hayes Plantation. Johnston depended on Homer to carry a letter from Hayes to Johnston's father-in-law William Cathcart in Northampton County.

Homer may have been the same individual who was listed on Samuel Johnston's uncle Gabriel's estate inventory in 1756 as a boy named Homer. Samuel Johnston later became the administrator of his uncle's will, and therefore would have inherited many of the men and women his uncle had enslaved.
