Pompey, an African American man residing in colonial North Carolina, was enslaved by the Yeates family. When William Yeates of Bertie County died in about December 1752, he willed the use of Pompey's labor to his wife Mary Yeates. After Mary's death, Pompey's ownership then transferred to the Yeates' son, Richard, of Hertford County. In October 1765 Pompey came before the local freeholders court when he was accused of attempting to murder his enslaver. The motive for the crime was not recorded, but according to trial documents, Pompey confessed to the crime. As punishment, the local court ordered Pompey's execution by hanging on October 29, 1765. As a warning to other enslaved people, the court then ordered Pompey's decapitation. Any further information regarding this individual has not been located.
