Scip, an African American man residing in Craven County, North Carolina, was enslaved by James Coor. In 1771, Scip came before the local freeholders court when he was charged with breaking into Mary Worsley's home and threatening her. The motive for the crime was not recorded. The court found Scip guilty and as punishment, ordered his execution by hanging on February 8, 1771. The court later compensated Coor for the loss of Scip's labor.
