Biographical Description

Cain, an African American man residing in Bladen County, North Carolina, was enslaved by James Baldwin. In about April 1749 the local court found Cain guilty of shooting and killing John Green Sr., also of Bladen County. The motive for the crime was not recorded. As punishment, the court ordered Cain's execution. Following his death, the court compensated Baldwin for the loss of Cain's labor.
