Biographical Description

Tom, an African American man residing in Amelia County, Virginia, was enslaved by Edmund Booker. Sometime prior to January 30, 1775, Tom made his way to Northampton County, North Carolina, likely without the permission of his enslaver. There Tom was accused of committing a variety of unspecified crimes. The local freeholders' court found Tom guilty and ordered his execution by hanging on January 31, 1775. Booker later received compensation for the loss of Tom's labor. Any further records regarding this individual have not been located.
