Thomas Dockery was born in Maryland in 1717 and moved to Anson County, North Carolina in 1769. A prominent Baptist in the area, Dockery became a member of Anson County Committee of Correspondence in 1774 and helped draft that county's nonimportation resolves. He died in Richmond County, North Carolina in about May 1797.
