Biographical Description

Hugh Waddell (circa 1734-1773) was an Ireland-born merchant, planter, and politician who seems to have arrived in North Carolina sometime in the 1750s. During the French and Indian War, Waddell served as an officer in the British army. His leadership was credited with saving Fort Dobbs from Cherokee capture in 1760. Waddell additionally served as a representative for Rowan (1757-1760) and Bladen (1762, 1766, 1768, & 1771) Counties in the General Assembly.
