Biographical Description

James Speed Poythress was born in Granville County, North Carolina, on September 17, 1871. Poythress was a building supply merchant and officer in the North Carolina National Guard. He died in Henderson (Vance County) on October 18, 1918, one of thousands of North Carolinians to lose their lives to influenza during the 1918-1919 pandemic.
