Biographical Description

Charles Bondfield (d. 1781) was a a prominent lawyer of Edenton. In 1775 he served as a member of the Edenton Committee of Safety, a pro-patriot organization. By 1777, he was serving as a judge of the Edenton District Court of Oyer and Terminer, but he informed Governor Caswell in June 1777 that he did not wish to renew his appointment. Before his position was filled later that fall, Bondfield continued to manage the court proceedings, including receiving depositions from various people involved in the Gourd Patch Conspiracy and also overseeing the legal proceedings against John Lewellen and his associates. Even after stepping down from the court, Bondfield continued to serve as a justice of the peace.
