Biographical Description

James Campbell (d. c1799) was a resident of Bertie County who served as a justice for the Bertie County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions. In 1777 he was ordered to administer the oath of allegiance to residents in Captain Askiew's district in order to make sure that North Carolina's independence was not threatened. In 1779 he signed a petition to the North Carolina General Assembly asking that William Burket be exempted from militia service.
