Biographical Description

Stephen Cabarrus (29 August 1749-4 August 1808) was a planter and politician who resided in Chowan County. In 1777 and 1778 he signed two oaths swearing his allegiance to the State of North Carolina and promised to report any treasonous conspiracies that might threaten North Carolina's independence. He later represented Chowan County in the North Carolina General Assembly for many years and voted for North Carolina to join the United States and ratify the constitution in 1789.
