Biographical Description

Malachi Smith was a resident of Bertie and Martin Counties. In 1777 he may have served as a private in the 7th North Carolina Regiment of the Continental Army. By June 1778 he returned home, where he signed an oath swearing his allegiance to the State of North Carolina and promised to report any treasonous conspiracies that might threaten North Carolina's independence.
