Biographical Description

Andrew Johnson was born in Raleigh on December 29, 1808. He served in numerous roles throughout his political career including representative, senator, governor, and vice president, eventually becoming the 17th President of the United States. As president, Johnson had a lax approach to Reconstruction and favored forgiving former Confederates rather than punishing them. He died in Greenville, Tennessee on July 31, 1875.
