Biographical Description

Calvin Josiah Cowels was born in Yadkin County on January 6th, 1821. A mining and railroad investor, he was the superintendent of the United States Mint at Charlotte from 1869 to 1884. William Holden's son-in-law, he was active in promoting the governor's policies during Reconstruction. He died in Wilks County on April 1, 1907.
