Biographical Description

James Callaway was born in Bedford County, Virginia on December 31, 1736. A veteran of the French and Indian War, he served as a lieutenant and colonel for the Bedford County Regiment of the Virginia Militia until 1781 when he established an iron furnace. He operated the furnace for the remainder of the war. He died in Bedford County on November 1, 1809.
