Benjamin Allen Newland was born in Marion (McDowell County), North Carolina on February 14, 1849. Newland worked for the Western North Carolina Railroad and corresponded with Governor Zebulon B. Vance about his appointment. He was killed in a railroad accident in Oneida (Scott County), Tennessee on May 9, 1914.
