Biographical Description

Lyonel Reading was a an early resident of Bath County where he had frequent interactions with the Machapunga nation, or Bear River Indians. During the Tuscarora War, Reading transformed his home near present-day Washington into a fort, which was the westernmost colonial outpost in North Carolina at the time. He died in Bath County in about 1725.
