Biographical Description

Jane Anderson, also called Jane Fenix, was a resident of Perquimans or Pasquotank Precinct, North Carolina. Given her shared last name with John Fenix, Jane may have been a free African American, just as he was. By March 1715 Jane Anderson Fenix was in custody for suspected murder, but she somehow escaped and went with John Fenix and several others south, intending to escape justice by reaching the Spanish colony in Florida. Jane and the rest of her group were captured in Bath County, North Carolina and brought back to Perquimans to face trial. Jane and the others were found guilty and sentenced to death by hanging in April 1715.
