Biographical Description

Amy Demsy was a woman of color born in North Carolina on October 14, 1723. After her birth, likely because she was of mixed race ancestry, Demsy became indentured to Nathaniel Duckenfield's estate in Bertie County until she reached thirty-one years old. In about 1744 after she had reached the age of twenty-one, Demsy petitioned the local court for her freedom, arguing that her labor had more than compensated Duckenfield for what he had paid for her. It does not appear that Demsy's petition was initially successful, but she eventually gained her freedom and died sometime after 1764.
