Biographical Description

Dick was presumably an African American man residing in Northampton County, North Carolina. He was possibly enslaved by Samuel Thomas. In March 1768 after Samuel Thomas died, Dick was a witness in a murder trial which found three enslaved individuals guilty of Thomas' murder. Following the trial, Dick was punished for reasons that were not recorded in the trial documents, but it seems likely he may have been complicit in the crime somehow. As punishment, the court ordered that Dick be put in the pillory, have both his ears cut off, and receive thirty nine lashes. Any further records regarding this individual have not been located.
