Biographical Description

Jenne was an African American woman residing in Perquimans County, North Carolina. Jenne had been enslaved by Joseph Hasket, a Quaker, but due to his religious beliefs he freed Jenne in about 1776. Later, North Carolina passed a law stating that enslaved people could not be freed without permission of the courts. In 1783 local officials arrested Jenne, arguing that she had violated the law even though she had been emancipated prior to the law. If the courts sided against her, Jenne's labor would be sold at public auction. Any further information regarding this individual has not been located.
