Biographical Description

Gideon Newby was born in Perquimans County, North Carolina on September 15, 1751. A Quaker, in 1782 he signed a petition asking that Peter, a local man of mixed African American and American Indian ancestry, be allowed to remain unenslaved. Newby later moved to Randolph County, North Carolina, where he died on January 29, 1816.
