Mary Devane Lee arrived in North Carolina by 1751 with her husband Bryant Lee and they settled near the Black River in New Hanover County, North Carolina. In February 1768 Mary and Bryant were murdered by Will, an enslaved man that they had owned. The motive for the murder was not recorded.
