Cuff or Cuffy, an African American man residing in Beaufort County, North Carolina, was enslaved by Henry Ormond. Cuff's name was likely an English version of the Akan name Kofi, which was given to boys born on Fridays. Cuff's name indicates he might have been have been born in Africa, or born to African-born parents. The Cuff enslaved by Henry Ormond may be the same Cuffy that Ormond's father Wyriot purchased from John Aldorson in 1756. Cuffy was sixteen at the time of the deed, making him born in about 1740.
In July 1770, Cuff, along with four other people enslaved by Ormond, killed his enslaver by smothering him with a mattress. After Cuff's conspirators were found guilty, Cuff also confessed and was sentenced to be executed. Sometime between July 25 and August 3, 1770, Cuff escaped from jail. Records suggest Cuff was recaptured and executed sometime prior to January 18, 1771.
