Lucy, an African American woman residing in Beaufort County, North Carolina, was enslaved by Henry Ormond. The Lucy enslaved by Henry Ormond may be the same Lucy that Ormond's father Wyriot purchased from Joseph Adams in 1755. Lucy was three at the time of the deed, making her born in about 1752. In July 1770 Lucy, along with four other people enslaved by Ormond, killed her enslaver by smothering him with a mattress. Based on age, Lucy was likely the "house slave" that was the orchestrator of the plot, and likely the one who had previously attempted to run away but had been captured. The failed escape attempt them prompted Ormond's enslaved people to resort to violence in an attempt to win their emancipation. At the ensuing trial, the court found Lucy and her fellow conspirators guilty and sentenced her to be executed by being burned at the stake.
