Biographical Description

Phillis, an African American woman residing in Beaufort County, North Carolina, was enslaved by Henry Ormond. The Phillis enslaved by Henry Ormond may be the same Phillis that Ormond's father Wyriot purchased from Samuel Taylor in 1754. Phillis was thirty-two at the time of the deed, making her born in about 1722. In July 1770, Phillis, along with four other people enslaved by Ormond, killed her enslaver by smothering him with a mattress. At the ensuing trial, the court found Phillis and her fellow conspirators guilty and sentenced Phillis to be executed. Amongst the three enslaved women executed for the crime, Annis was valued the least at £20, indicating that she was likely elderly or had a diminished capacity for labor at the time of her death.
