Robert Boyd was born in Scotland in about 1688. A resident of Beaufort County, North Carolina by 1741, he served as a local justice of the peace. In 1748 he presided over a case involving Stephen, and enslaved man charged with theft. Boyd died in Beaufort or Hyde County, North Carolina in 1775.
