Jack, an African American man residing in Beaufort County, North Carolina, was enslaved by Edward Howcutt. In late November 1748, Jack helped another enslaved man named Stephen break out of the jail in Bath, North Carolina. The court documents do not indicate whether Jack and Stephen knew one another previously. Jack then hid Stephen at the Howcutt plantation for one night before returning to Bath, where the pair hoped to steal tools to break Stephen's shackles. After the pair broke into several stores, they were eventually discovered. While Stephen was arrested, Jack made his escape in a canoe. It is unclear whether Jack was ever captured or if he faced punishment for the burglary. Any further records regarding this individual have not been located.
