My dear Mr. Spoon:-

In the absence of the Governor I beg to acknowledge receipt of your letter of September 9th. Governor Bickett is in the Western part of the State for a month and will return to the office the first week in October.

I will say for him, however, that you should present the facts contained in your letter to the Governor to the District Exemption Board when Richard Alexander Stanford’s case comes up for consideration. As you, no doubt, know the Governor has no authority whatever to pass upon this case, but the District Board has full jurisdiction. Personally I think this young man can be of a great deal more service to the country on your farm than he would be as one soldier in an army of millions. And from you statements of the facts in this case I believe that if any registrant is given a deferred classification on agricultural grounds this young man will be so classified.
