Inquisition Indented taken at Christ Church parish in Craven County North Carolina, the 22d day of August in the year of our Lord one Thousand Seven Hundred and fifty four before me Solomon Rew his Majestys Coroner for the County of Craven upon View of the Body of Joseph Bembridge late of the parish County and Province afd. then and there lying dead and upon the Oath of Francis Fountain, Charles Evett, John Barnicastle, Richard Hall, William Arther, John Fountaine, Joseph Martin, Richard Davis, James Barnicastle, Robert Delap, James Purdue, Kitrel Mondine Thomas Morss, Edward Harbert James Fortenor, John Stevenson, Stephen Meriman, and John Mead; Good and Lawfull men of the parish of Christ Church in Craven County and province afsd. who being Charged and sworn to Enquire how and in what Manner the said Joseph Bembridge by his Death Came, upon theirs Oaths do say that a Negro fellow Belonging to New Man Dun of the County Parish & Province afd ^named Jack^ by force and arms Did Assault the said Joseh Bembridge with a Certain Narrow Ax, felonously and of his Malice forethought Did Give the afd. Joseph Bembridge one Mortol Wound in his Head of which wound the afd. Joseph Instantly Dyed and so the afd. Negro named Jack—him the said Joseph Bembridge then and there feloniously Killed and wilfully Murdered, Contrary to the Peace of our Sovereign Lord the King his Crown and Dignity In Testimony whereof as well I the said Coroner as the Jurors afd. to this Inquisition have severally put our hands and seals the Day year and place first above written.
