Biographical Description

Jack, an African American man in Craven County, North Carolina, was enslaved by Newman Dunn. In 1754 for reasons unknown, Jack murdered a white couple named Joseph and Lydia Bembridge with an ax. Jack's enslaver Newman Dunn later became the administrator of the Bembridges' estates, indicating a close relationship between the two families. Jack likely knew the Bembridges before the attack. While Jack's subsequent trial documents have not been located, it is likely that Jack received capital punishment as a result of the crime. Any further records regarding this individual have not been located.
