An Inquisition Indented taken at the county of Bertie the Twenty sixth day of May one Thousand seven hundred fifty & seven before Joseph Hardy Coroner of the county aforsaid upon sight of the Body of Elizabeth Knott Wife of Jos Knott of the county aforsaid Then & there lying dead on the Road By the Oath of thirteen Honest and Lawfull men of the county aforesaid being sowrn Tryed and charged to Enquire on the part of our sovereign Lord the King after what fasheon and how the aforesd: Elizabeth Knott came to her death upon their oath do say that the aforesaid Elizabeth Knott on the 24th day of May was Murdered ^we beleive^ by an Indian that was seen to Run from her after she was dead and by the many cuts on her head and her scull being Broke beleives she was killed with a Tamahawk or a Lightwood Knott and so the Jurors aforsd. upon their oath aforsaid say ^we do belive^ that the aforsd. Elizabeth Knott the aforsd Indian feloniously did kill and murther in manner aforsaid against the peace of our said Lord the king his Crown and Dignity in Testomony whereof I the said Coroner have as well as the Jurors to this Inquisition Interchangeably Sett our Seals the year and place aforesaid
